Squirrely Sunday!

What a little sneak!  Were the sunflower seeds we set out, and the oodles of mulberries from our tree not enough? And, yes...how about all of those pecans from our trees?  OH, NO!  I caught this thief in the act from our kitchen window on the seed bell we hung for the chickadees and other sweet birds.  And, he's quite the acrobat, hanging upside down, and swinging from the tree limb like 'Tarzan'!

Above is his 'sweet' little mannerly self, gleefully savoring his find!
Do you think he will fall off the branch?
I think NOT!

See?  He cleverly maneuvers his lithe body as if on a trapeze, and, swings down to the bell to capture the goods!

Eventually, this artist tired of the game, and, disappeared into the trees farther out back.  And, the chickadees and wrens resumed their usual snacking from this delectable bell of treats!

Remember these young 'Zinnia' plants?

Well, here's a sneak preview of what they're up to almost one month later.

They're starting to open up, and, you can see there are plenty more buds-these plants are loaded!  And, they require a LOT of water.  We water them twice a day!  Karo thinned them out a little, because some of the plants were too weak.  But, I don't think we'll suffer any...there are plenty of them.  And, throughout the summer months, you can continue to plant the seed.  Zinnias will grow and prosper well into fall.   These flowers on top will be good for cutting in just a few short days.  And, they thrive indoors in cool water for at least one week.

I know I haven't been around for a while, but, that doesn't mean I'm not thinking, writing, and shooting flicks!  And, I'm glad to see you here!  Thank you for stopping by.  I am a bit behind on my reading...but, you know, I WILL catch up!  I hope you all are well, and, having great luck with your spring and summer plantings.  Stop by and say hello when you get a chance!

  1. Hi, Susan! I'm glad you're still with us. You are a valuable friend. Those squirrels certainly are acrobatic. Dozens of them live in the woods surrounding my house. They come to my feeding station daily competing with birds for the seed I scatter. I enjoy watching their antics as they drive each other away, hang upside down on trees, wave their tails, etc. Your Zinnias are really coming along nicely. Central Florida was parched for months before tropical storm Beryl stirred up the atmosphere and gave us one good day of rain. With the daily temp in the 90s and the baking sun things are already getting too dry again. I wish we would get some of the rain that fell on the Queen's Jubilee over the weekend! Have a wonderful week, dear Susan!

    1. Hello there Shady! I can't believe you're already in a bad heat in Florida. We are now up in the 90's in Texas, and, feel picked on. My Zinnias are opening up each day...should have more for great photos soon. Isn't the Queen's Jubilee something? Everyone is so upbeat and excited. I've seen a little of it on TV.

One good rain, so far? Well, I hope you get more soon. We had a couple of days rain last week-muchly needed. Thank you for coming by. I enjoyed your visit-see you soon Shady!

    1. Hi Nancy! Thank you for the compliments, but, your flowers and herbs look pretty darn good, too! It is already hot now, up in the 90s. I'm going to back off and not plant too much right now...just keeping it low and easy. Thanks for coming by, and, have a cool week!♥

  3. Hi Susan. Lovely to see this post from you today. Gosh, those Zinnias are starting to look really good, aren't they?! Those pesky squirrels (although entertaining to look at) are a bit of a pain, aren't they. They have ruined so many of our bird feeders! Lovely to see your tribute to our Queen there - what a delightful photo you have picked for us. Her face really does light up when she smiles! See you again soon my friend.

    1. Good day Susan! And, I really like your profile picture! Yeah, those feisty squirrels are really something. I can't hang plants or flowers from the tree branches because they dig in them, and plant pecans in them. Eventually, it kills the plant. But, they find the food, don't they? Hope you're doing well...still miss your coffee blog. Thank you for coming by to say hello. Our Zinnias are still coming out! More pictures of course! Hugs to you Susan♥

    2. Hi Susan, for some reason I missed seeing your reply. What devious (and clever) little squirrels... actually planting pecans in hanging plants. They really do 'squirrel' food away !! Aw, thank you re my coffee blog - I just plain and simply ran out of ideas!! I still love coffee though lol ;D) Hugs back xx

  5. Thisisme...what a great celebration you're having! I'm glad you liked the photo I picked for the Queen...my mother liked it too! She is a great lady and she looks so happy. I am sorry about her husband, and hope he recouperates soon! I have even more Zinnias today, and got a few pictures of them. But it was grueling hot, up in the 90's. Thank you for popping over, and saying hello. See you soon, hugs to you and those darling children!♥

    1. Hey Laura! We hung seed bells from branches, and, then from a shepherd's hook to keep the squirrels away. The hook worked best. They find everything! And they get into my hanging plants...so I don't hang plants from trees anymore. But, yes, they are cute and entertaining! Thanks for coming by. The zinnias are still popping open, we're starting to cut and bring them in! Take care and have a good week!♥

    1. Hi Deana,
I'm so glad you came by and enjoyed my pictures. The squirrels are plentiful around here. I have a mulberry tree that bears the fruit in the spring, and the squirrels really enjoy the fruit. Farther out back in the yard is an old pecan tree that still makes pecans. The squirrels gather and bury the pecans for winter.

I have never grown zinnias upside down, I wouldn't know how to attempt it. We keep our zinnia seeds too, and, they grew plentiful throughout the summer and into the fall. You're right, they are such happy and beautiful flowers.

Thank you so much for stopping by to say hello...please come by anytime. Have a great day!
